Educator Workshop — March 7, 2026

The National Civil Rights Museum offers enriching Teacher Workshops throughout the year, designed to equip educators with the knowledge and tools to effectively teach the Civil Rights Movement in their classrooms. The March 7, 2026 workshop is part of a consistent series held across the academic year, with past sessions held February 7, 2026; November 8, 2025; August 16, 2025; July 27, 2024; April 27, 2024; March 23, 2024; February 17, 2024; December 2, 2023; and November 4, 2023. Educators have the option to attend virtually or in person, and some sessions include museum exhibit tours.

These workshops are grounded in the Museum’s commitment to bringing powerful, honest civil rights history into K-12 classrooms. Participating educators gain in-depth understanding of sensitive themes and innovative strategies for engaging students in critical thinking and discussions that bridge the gap between historical events and contemporary social justice issues. The Museum’s workshops emphasize intersectionality, exploring how the Civil Rights Movement connects to disability rights, LGBTQIA+ liberation, economic justice, and voting rights. Educators are encouraged to consider how they create their own legacy as role models and how they can encourage learners to work toward accessible and inclusive communities.

Memphis Shelby County School teachers who attend receive credits in PLZ. The workshops are developed in collaboration with community partners, including the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice. Educators use primary sources that uplift hidden histories and are provided with tools for museum visits, classroom activities that connect civil rights history to contemporary issues, and enduring essential questions that prompt students to grapple with the human experience and the ongoing struggle for equality.
